Design and Assessment of District Heating Systems with Solar Thermal Prosumers and Thermal Storage

In this study, a holistic energy, economic and environmental assessment was performed on prosumer-based district heating system, including scenarios with varying size, retrofitting stages system configurations. A modeling framework built which comprises thermal network design simulation model; building energy demand model for districts; supply storage technology models that allow assessing solar fraction, equivalent annual cost greenhouse gas emissions of systems (DHS). Furthermore, the approach allows comparing performance DHS individual (IHS) same set options (rooftop-mounted collectors, boilers tanks). The applied to Swiss case study. results study show often outperform IHS; however, parameters such as stage buildings configuration have impacts DHS. most important parameter lies in adequate selection volume over collector area ratio, indicates solutions are only advantageous if they properly sized. Smaller districts retrofitted especially benefit from terms performance. Maximum fractions 50% (non-retrofitted case) 63% (retrofitted were reached solutions.
